Day 4: Dancing
Sunday, October 31, 1999

Around 10pm (Saturday) people started to show up at Matthew's. Everyone was dressed up and ready to go. Jean-Pierre made Cosmos for everyone, and Matthew put on some dance music to set the tone.

The whole crew getting ready.

It seemed like everyone had brought a camera, so the group photos took quite some time to take (try taking 7 or 8 pictures while shuffling the person who's in control of the camera sometime). I had brought along some glow sticks and the "word writer" at JP's suggestion, and that turned out to be a good idea, as they are not as prevalent in Perth.

James, Philip and Deborah.

Limo (actually his name is John, his last name is Lim, so his nickname is Limo) was a big hit camping it up in his "miniature" costume (he's the one in the blue feather boa, and he's straight!). He was clearly ready for a good time.

Simon, James and Randy. Nice pants!

James had ordered cabs for 11pm, but when 11:20 rolled around and they hadn't arrived (taxis seem to be unreliable in every city!) we decided to pile into two cars and head out.

Some sparklers were in order as we left the house.

The dance was held in a large warehouse, several times the size of Universe or Metropolis in SF. There was a large stage at the front, and outside across the back parking lot was a second tent with another small dance floor playing somewhat different music. JP and I noticed right away that everyone was in a great mood, and we realized it's because there are only a few big dance parties a year in Perth, so everyone really goes to have a good time when they happen.

Matthew and JP mugging for the camera.

The crowd was much more mixed (more women, more straight couples) than clubs in SF which was actually kind of nice. When we first arrived it was pretty crowded, but it got really packed later on (someone estimated 3000 people). Lots of cute and hunky Ozzy boys everywhere, very nice!

I danced for a while with a couple of cute guys that I met, though they both turned out to have boyfriends who showed up shortly afterwards. Oh well. The group we went with wandered around some, but mostly stuck together, all having a great time. The music was fantastic, very solid and steady.

There were a couple of performances on stage, one by the Perth Marching Boys, and another by a couple who spun flaming balls around on long chains. That one really got the crowd going!

A little while later I felt some arms wrap around me and when I looked back it was James with a big smile on his face. We ended up spending the rest of the night dancing (the next day I was told that a few in our group thought we had become glued together...) We moved around the dance floor, and checked out the second tent a few times as well (though the walk from one to the other was dubbed the "wind tunnel" as there was a very cool breeze blowing which was very chilly with shirts off! It was a really great night of dancing, everyone was having a good time.

James filled out his outfit very nicely!

We stayed until about 5:30 and then headed with JP and Matthew to the after hours party. When we arrived there were only a few people there, so we headed to Monica's to relax for about two hours, then tried it again, but it was still dead, so we decided to skip it. After dropping off JP and Matthew and making plans to meet for lunch later in the afternoon, I went with James back to his house.

We woke up around 4:30 after managing a solid 5 hours of sleep and James started to call everyone to roust them for lunch. We met at a place called the Icon Cafe at about 5:30, everyone recounting their stories from the night before. We all decided that we were up for some more dancing, so we headed back to Matthew's to change, then out to the Red Lion. It was a really nice club with a great atmosphere (there was a full sized World War II fighter plane hanging from the high ceiling) and great music. That ran from 8 to 10, then we headed to Connections for more dancing. One nice touch to the Red Lion was that they always close out the night by playing the song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" which the whole crowd sings along with, lots of fun!

Connections was also busy (there was pretty much a mass migration from one club to the other) and had great music. We stayed until about midnight, then I headed back with James to his place for the night.
