Day 3: Wildlife
Saturday, October 30, 1999

We all got up around 10am, had some breakfast, and then headed for Cohunu, a small wildlife park with Koalas, Kangaroos and Emu. The park had small trails which ran through a wooded area, with sections for each type of animal. The first thing we saw was a mother koala with a 3 month old baby. I got to feed them and pet them.

The little one was so cute.

The emu are very similar to ostriches, only slightly smaller. They have an ugly face, and aren't afraid to approach for some puffed rice (the approved feeding material). We generally stayed away from them.

The Kangaroo area was pretty large, with a few dozen kangaroos wandering about. We were able to just walk up to them and feed them or pet them.

Note the joey in the pouch.

Many of them were lounging or sleeping. Apparently they become more active later in the afternoon. They were very friendly and didn't mind us being up close. When they want to move quickly, their hopping covers long distances amazingly fast.

This is a collection of different animals that we saw.

Apparently Koala spend much of their time doped up on eucalyptus oil.

There was an area with talking parrots. It's great to hear a parrot say "Hello Darling" in an Australian accent as you walk up to them.

Ask JP about the "Killer Deer" sometime.

We each tried feeding the kangaroos.

We left the animal preserve and headed into Perth for lunch and some shopping (never need to twist my arm too hard to go shopping!). Visited several nice clothing stores in an open mall area. I was lucky enough to find a pair of "digital camo" pants (the ones I tried to get in London, except these fit properly). What luck! After some looking around, Jean-Pierre found a couple of pairs of shorts that he liked as well. (Turns out he hadn't brought any warm weather clothes, and the weather was much warmer since their return from France).

One of several street performers.

After a quick nap back at Matthew's, we got changed and headed down to the Pride parade. The parade started at 8pm, with the big weekend dance party afterwards. Very different from SF where the parade is the day after the dance parties and everyone has to drag themselves out of bed to make it.

The parade got started right on time, and as seems to be the tradition everywhere, the "Dykes on Bikes" started it off loudly.

The girls and their Harley's.

There were a number of floats representing different groups and organizations. When PFLAG came by there was a wave of applause following them down the street. The whole parade lasted about an hour, which was a very watchable length. Afterwards we walked back to the car to get ready for the dance.

These are the "Perth Marching Boys".

Several of the floats had good sound systems and banks of light pointed out the back, with some sort of performance going on behind. The Perth Marching Boys were all dressed as Roman gladiators doing a big dance routine. Saw Adrian in the group as they went by.

Since the dance party really started around midnight (and since I didn't take any pictures on Sunday...), see the next page for details...
