Cocos Island

Saturday - June 25, 2022

Had a 5:30am Uber ride to SFO. Hung out in the lounge for a bit before boarding a five and a half hour flight to Miami, bit of weather delayed landing about 20 minutes. An hour in the lounge, then a two and a half hour flight to San Jose, Costa Rica. Took a taxi to the Marriott about 15 minutes from the airport. Checked in, headed to the bar for a poke bowl and some wine. Then bedtime.

Had breakfast at the hotel, then had a one and a half hour van ride to Puntarenas where we boarded the Argo at the Undersea Hunter dock. The argo is a 130' scuba liveaboard with the rear portion dedicated to a submarine capable of taking 3 people to 1000'. Stowed our gear, then relaxed for a bit until the rest of the group arrived. Met Dave & Brenda, Kerry, John & Claire, Sandra & Fulvio, Peter (Tio), Charlie, Matt & Kalena, Angela, Ruth, Thibaut, and his father Thierry. Had a safety briefing, then the ship set sail for Cocos Island, a 36 hour crossing. Chit chatted with the other divers, had dinner, then went to bed with the boat rocking around a bit.

Boat was still rocking when we woke up. Had breakfast, a few people stayed in their cabins due to all of the motion. Hung out talking to the other divers until lunch, then had a briefing on the Deep Sea, the submersible. Got assigned the Wednesday morning time slot, very exciting. Relaxed for the afternoon, had dinner, then off to bed.

Boat arrived at Cocos Island around 4am. We got up around 6 for coffee and breakfast. Had a dive briefing at 8, then around 9 we headed out for the checkout dive. Nice peaceful dive, quite a few white tip sharks, a couple of rays, and a few other fish. Second dive was about two hours later. A bit of current, but we saw a hammerhead being cleaned, and then a couple of other hammerheads. Had lunch back on the boat, the relaxed until 3 when we did our final dive. Saw some white tips sharks swimming in the current in a channel, as well as a rock fish. Then it was back to the boat to discuss the day, have a tasty dinner, then head to bed.
