Montezuma Waterfall
We woke up and checked in with Dan and Assana at 8:30 and decided to have breakfast at 9:15. During breakfast we discovered that their night was a bit tougher than ours, the music and noise from the lobby really bothered them. After breakfast we checked with the front desk about quieter rooms and they said to check back at 2pm; they had put us on a request list. We asked at the activities desk about a waterfall we had seen on one of the posters, and were told it was about a half hour drive away, so we decided to go there.

We put on our bathing suits and hit the road, headed to the town of Montezuma. The roads varied from paved potholes to bumpy dirt road, but we were equipped for it. We zipped along at about 35mph, passing lots of lesser powered vehicles along the way. The climate on the Nicoya Peninsula is much different than what we saw for the first few days of our trip, much drier. As we entered Montezuma we descended a very steep and winding dirt road. We made our way through the town and then to a dirt parking lot where we paid $2 to park. We walked along a trail following a river and came upon a rock face with water cascading down over it. We thought this might be the waterfall, but some people told us the real falls were up the river a ways.

We continued on a path alongside the river for another few minutes and found a 70 foot waterfall falling into a pool that fed the river. It was really cool. We all jumped in a swam around, Randy and Dan even climbed the rocks underneath the waterfall and then dove (or fell, in Dan's case) back in. After we warmed up in the sun for a bit we walked back down the trail to the car. We were hungry so we walked across the bridge to a restaurant named La Cascada ("The Waterfall") that had some nice shady tables. We had some sandwiches and watched the wildlife along the river. Then we walked across the street to a cute place called Amor de Mar, a little hotel with open air bungalows that looked out to the sea. We walked down to a tide pool and watched some crabs run around in the surf, it was a beautiful setting.

The drive back to the hotel went pretty quickly, Randy was getting used to the roads. At the front desk they offered us two different rooms that were supposed to be marginally quieter, so we went ahead and moved to them. During the afternoon Dan and Assana went down to the beach for a bit, while Randy and Rick jumped in the pool for a few minutes and went back to the hotel room. Rick napped while Randy worked on writing about the last few days. In the early evening we all met for dinner. We attempted to sneak into the fancy restaurant, but they only did seatings at 7, 8 and 9, which didn't sound promising, so we opted for the buffet. During dinner we marveled at the mass of people and kids surrounding us and decided to return to Dan and Assana's room to review what Randy had written so far about the trip.

As Randy read each day aloud we all remembered the events and laughed. Dan had been keeping a journal and we made sure to include most of his notes as well. We all giggled at some of the silly stuff we had experienced, and some of the catch-phrases that had taken hold during the trip (and don't forget the reindeer!). Afterwards we went back to our room, we would regroup in the morning for breakfast.
