Arrive Sydney, then on to Cairns

Thursday, Day 2 - Previous
Next - Saturday, Day 4

In Sydney we zipped through retrieving our luggage and clearing customs, which was good since there's a 10 minute bus ride from one side of the airport to the other. Our flight to Cairns was on another 747-400. This time we were in coach, but at least we had an empty seat between us. Three hours later we landed in Cairns. The airport is very small, and the weather was hot and sunny. We met our driver who drove us to the Cairns International Hotel, right on the water in downtown Cairns.

Cairns is a small port city.

There are green mountains all along the coast.

We checked in and unpacked, then went down to the concierge to schedule some trips. We already had diving planned for Sunday and a rain forest safari for Wednesday, so we decided to do a combination hot-air ballooning/white water rafting trip for Saturday, and a train/sky-tram trip through the Kurunda rain forest for Monday. We wandered around downtown Cairns for a while, picking up some waterproof shoes for the next day's adventure.

The Reef Casino was across the street,
with a large enclosed atrium on top.

The atrium was full of tropical plants.

The casino at night.

We went back to the room to change, then went down to a sushi restaurant next door. We had a tasty dinner, then walked around outside for a while before heading back to the room to sleep. We had an early start time for the next morning!

Yamagami, a sushi restaurant.

We had some fun with camera angles...

And with odd angles against the interior decor...
