Down in the restaurant we had a semi self serve breakfast in the funky dining area. Then Rick took the wheel as we drove through southern France. We arrived at the Pont du Gard around noon and there were hardly any people there. The viaduct is from Roman times and was used to carry water and people over the river. We had great light as we walked around and over taking pictures. Driving out we stopped at a very authentic French restaurant and had grilled shrimp. Then it was back on the road to the town of Arles.
Arles is a small town near Avignon on the Rhone river. When we arrived Rick went to ring the front bell at the Hotel Particulier and Randy had to go around the block since there was a car behind and the streets are so narrow. He almost didn't make it back! (A truck unloading boxes and a teenage driver making a 13 point turn in the middle of a tiny street conspired against him).
The hotel had only 8 rooms and felt like a grand French Villa. Our room was huge, 30' x 30' with a 12 foot ceiling and doors leading out to the patio and long narrow garden pool. We walked around town and were pleasantly surprised that there was so much to see. We walked around the antique theater, the amphitheater and then along the river. We stopped and had some tasty crepes before going back to the room to relax. Rick even had a massage in the spa in the basement. We had a very quiet, very romantic dinner in the hotel's dining room before bed.
