Kauai - Tuesday - August 24
Tuesday morning we got an early start (thought not as early as a certain penguin might have liked... :-) and headed to the East around the island. We stopped in Kapa'a (where Rick's family had vacationed when he was a kid) and picked up some Boogie Boards, then continued on all the way to the North side of the island. Along the way we saw an amazing amount of foliage. Kauai boasts the wettest spot on Earth, with over 600 inches of rain recorded in the single year! The beach at the end of the road was really beautiful and we stayed and watched the waves for a while before heading back. We stopped back in Kapa'a for lunch at the Olympic Grill (thanks for the recommendation Shannon!). Then we headed to the beach about a mile North where we went in the water and had a great time playing in the surf for an hour or so. We even got treated to a heavy rainstorm while we were in the water!

Around 4pm we had cocktails overlooking the water at the hotel, then at 6:15 we had dinner at Dondero's, an Italian restaurant in the hotel. (Our waiter, Juan, turned out to have moved to Kauai from Noe Valley in San Francisco!) During dinner we watched a torential downpour outside for about 10 minutes, and then it was gone as quickly as it arrived! After dinner we took the long way back to our room, walking along the path by the ocean where Rick was rewarded with several frogs jumping across the wet grass!

The next morning we boarded our flight back to San Francisco. Kauai had been a fantastic vacation!
