We flew to Kenicott where we flew over the glacier that we'd hike later in the day and past the Root Icefall, one of the largest in the world. We passed by Hidden Lake, which is dammed up by ice each year until it breaks through and all gushes down the valley. We landed at the McCarthy airfield and walked along a path into town. This was the first time the mosquitos showed up, but an application of Off seemed to keep them away.

The Root Icefall |
Those ripples are 200 feet tall! |

In town we caught a taxi ride from one of the Singing Pilgrims who live in the area. Apparently they are quite popular. He offered to sell us one of their CDs, but we declined... The Taxi dropped us off at the Kenicott Mill, which was a big mining operation a number of years ago. At this point much of it is in a very rickety state, but there were efforts going on to restore parts of it.

We walked past the mill and hiked along a trail for about a mile and a half where we stepped out onto the glacier. It was pretty amazing seeing the size of it. The ripples that from the plane had looked 10 or 20 feet tall turned out to be 80 to 100 feet tall! We hiked over the top of it for a while, marveling at the textures in the ice, and looking at the streams of melting water that were running along everywhere. We filled up our water bottle from the cold water and had a drink, it tasted really good. Afterwards we hiked back to the Mill and had lunch at the lodge. Then we caught the shuttle back into town and out to the airfield.

We took off and flew over to Chitna to refuel. At the end of the airfield there were people using "fish wheels" to catch salmon. These consist of two baskets on an axle which turn in the fast moving river. The salmon are swimming upstream and are caught in the basket, then flipped into a catch basin. Chuck convinced one of the people to give us a salmon for dinner. Then we hopped back in the plane and flew the short distance back to Ultima Thule.

After relaxing for a while we went up to the main lodge for dinner. Chuck had grilled the salmon and it tasted great. This night we were the only guests staying there. We spent a while talking with several of the employees. One in particular, Joe, had some really interesting stories of hiking around different parts of the world. Afterwards we headed back down to our cabin and to sleep. It had been a very full day!
